Custom Deck Builder Serving Minnesota's East Metro & Western Wisconsin

dREamodel designs and builds custom wood and composite decks for homeowners throughout Minnesota’s East Metro and Western Wisconsin. Every project is planned around the home, the property, and the way the finished space will be used.

Whether you are replacing an aging deck or creating a new outdoor space, our team can help you compare layouts, materials, railings, stairs, and finishing details. The result is a custom deck that complements your home and gives you more ways to enjoy your backyard.

Add Comfort, Function, and Value With a Custom Deck

A well-designed deck should feel connected to both the home and the yard. It should provide enough room for the activities you enjoy without looking oversized or out of place. dREamodel plans each deck around the property, the home’s architecture, and the homeowner’s priorities.

Our custom deck projects can include composite or wood decking, updated railings, stairs, fascia, lighting, and other features that make the finished space more comfortable and useful. We also help homeowners evaluate an existing deck when they are considering replacement or a significant update.

Homeowners who want to see how a deck can work alongside another exterior addition can also explore our custom porch options.

What Goes Into a Custom Deck?

Building a custom deck involves more than choosing a flooring material or railing style. Every project is made up of structural components, finish materials, and design details that work together to create a safe, attractive outdoor space.

This short overview introduces some of the key elements that go into a custom deck. As you continue down the page, you’ll find more information about each component and the options available for your project.

Deck Footing Options

The footing system supports the deck and helps provide a stable foundation. The right approach depends on the property, deck design, soil conditions, and structural requirements.

  • Traditional Concrete Footings
  • Helical Piers
  • Strip Footings

Deck Framing Options

The framing creates the structure beneath the visible decking. Material selection and proper layout both play an important role in the strength and performance of the finished deck.

  • Natural Wood 16” on Center
  • Natural Wood 12” on Center
  • Steel
  • Aluminum

Deck Flooring Options

dREamodel helps homeowners compare deck flooring options based on the look they want, the amount of maintenance they prefer, and how they plan to use the deck.

  • A Variety of Natural Woods
  • Wood/Plastic Composites
  • PVC

Trim and Fascia Details

Trim and fascia provide a finished appearance around the deck’s edges and structural components. These details can coordinate with the decking, railing, and home exterior.

  • Natural Wood
  • Wood/Plastic Composite
  • PVC
  • High-Performance Paintable Products

Deck Railing Options

Railings contribute to safety while also shaping the overall look of a deck. Homeowners can select a style that complements the decking material and the architecture of the home.

  • Aluminum
  • Wood
  • Cable
  • Composite
  • Glass
  • Steel

Finishing features can make a deck easier to use, improve visibility, and add function after sunset.

  • Storage
  • Benches
  • Planters
  • Water Diversion Systems
  • Privacy Panels
  • Screens

During the planning process, our team helps you compare practical options for your home rather than asking you to sort through every available product on your own.

Low-Maintenance Composite Decks for Minnesota Homes

Composite decking offers a finished look with less recurring maintenance than traditional wood. Available in a range of colors and grain patterns, it can complement many home styles without requiring routine staining or sealing.

dREamodel helps homeowners compare composite products based on appearance, maintenance needs, and how the deck will be used in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin conditions.

Is Composite Decking Right for Your Project?

Composite decking may be a strong option when you want:

  • Less recurring maintenance
  • Consistent color and finish
  • A broad selection of design options
  • Coordinated decking, fascia, and railing components
  • A deck intended for frequent use and entertaining

The right material still depends on the project. Our team can help you compare composite products with natural wood before you make a final selection.

Our Deck Installation Products

Every custom deck starts with quality materials. That’s why dREamodel partners with trusted manufacturers like Westbury, Fortress, TimberTech, Azek, Trex, and Railcraft. During the design process, we’ll help you compare products and select the decking and railing options that best fit your home, lifestyle, and maintenance preferences.

We received quotes from three different contractors and we could tell early on that Jon was the most knowledgeable and easiest to work with.

From start to finish the process was incredibly smooth. His showroom made it extremely easy to visualize and make choices for our 30'x16' three-season porch / deck combo.

A month later, they had all the permits, materials, and plans laid out and began construction. Thirteen business days after that, they had everything complete. I truly couldn't recommend them enough.

I cannot say enough amazing things about Jon and his team. Incredibly professional, communicated frequently to keep us informed, left the job clean every night, respected our home and were so friendly. Jon listened when we shared what we wanted to accomplish with this remodel. He never pushed us to do anything more than we planned. The craftsmanship was incredible! They got this job done in 2.5 weeks and it is beautiful. We have nothing to say on what could’ve been better. From start to finish, they were top notch. We highly recommend for all your remodel needs!

We talked with dREamodel regarding adding a 3 season sunroom to our house. Darren was extremely responsive and able to answer all of our questions. We met some of the dREamodel staff at their showroom in Maplewood and had the opportunity to see the products that would be used for our project. Very knowledgeable and customer focused. Past client references spoke highly of dREamodel, not just about the construction process but about the customer service provided. If you are considering an outdoor project for your house, reach out to Darren at dREamodel. You won’t be disappointed.

We had the pleasure of working with Darren Wagner, who truly made us feel like family rather than customers. He provided us with a wealth of information and several great options for our deck. Everyone at Dreamodel—from the office staff to the builders—was friendly, helpful, and patient throughout the entire process. We would absolutely work with them again on any future projects.

From the moment I contacted Dreamodel about our porch and deck project I was impressed. Within a few hours, a salesman, Darren, contacted me, and set up an appointment for the next morning. He appeared on time, listened to our vision for our project, took our written wish list seriously, and discussed options. He also noted a serious framing problem with our existing porch, and proposed a quick fix to bring it up to code.

The morning after we first met, Darren had produced a detailed proposal, which he then went over with me so that I understood exactly what was included. He invited us to the Dreamodel showroom which was built out with many of the products Dreamodel uses for their porch and deck projects. My husband and I were able to pick and choose among the products, quality, and materials. If something wasn't on display in the showroom, Darren found it for us. The biggest challenge was finding the right door for the porch. We wanted a double screen door from the existing screened porch to the new deck. Darren never gave up on that door, and finally found the perfect, though pricey option. We went for it and couldn't be happier.

Within a week of our first contact, we had negotiated a fixed price contract, including clearly marked estimates for specific line items like the door that might change during the course of the project. In the end, the project came in within two hundred dollars of the contract amount, and we have exactly what we wanted. The craftmanship and materials are top quality, the design is beautiful, and the process was transparent.

We were particularly impressed by several things we'd never encountered before, even though we've dealt with contractors many times in the past. First, Darren's bid was broken down into discreet subprojects such as demolition, construction of the new deck, and renovation of the existing porch, with each sub-project line item including labor and materials so we could pick and choose what we had to have and what we could do without. Second, Darren's bid was the lowest of six that we got -- in two cases, less than 35% of the highest bids -- yet there were no shortcuts, and the quality was impeccable. Third, there were no surprises. Darren stayed with the project throughout, and was always available to answer questions. He came to the job site nearly every day, and was our main point of contact throughout the project. Having the salesperson intimately involved with all phases of the project is a unique approach, and worked extremely well for us.

It is rare to choose the lowest bidder on a project, and be completely happy with the results, but that is what we experienced with Dreamodel, Darren, and the Dreamodel crew.

We had a great experience from start to finish with a deck & concrete patio. Darren was responsive, answered my questions, and delivered a great product. dREamodel does not cut corners, they do not cheap out, and they only work with individuals who they trust. Could we have possibly found a lower quote? Possibly. However, for us, it was worth the cost to go with a trusted, reliable company…especially with this investment. Totally recommend!

Darren was the catalyst that got us us interested in dREmodel for replacing our cedar deck. Without his engagement we would never had gone ahead and spent on a new composite deck. His guidance was expertly spot on. He brought his A team and they had most everything done in three hard days of work. It's a beautiful product, Dekorator brand, suggested by Darren. The Sedona color makes the black railings really stand out. Matt had to cut 23 step stringers by hand. It looks great! Love it! A couple concerns we're taken care of immediately and to my satisfaction. I am picky. Thanks Darren, Matt, John and crew for a beautiful deck, and for making my life easier. I don't have to power wash or get on my hands and knees to stain any more!.

We had a great experience with Darren and his crew. They built a deck, did stamp concrete, and got us an electrician for our hotub. The backyard has become a place of peace. We really enjoy the beauty and workmanship dREamodel provided!

A Deck Designed Around Your Priorities

Every custom deck project begins with the home, the property, and the way the homeowner wants to use the space. Our process brings those details together before construction begins.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Decks

How much does a custom deck cost?

The cost of a custom deck depends on its size, elevation, layout, structural requirements, decking material, railing system, stairs, and accessories. A simple ground-level deck will have different requirements than a multi-level composite deck with custom railings and lighting. dREamodel reviews the property and project goals before preparing project-specific pricing.

Is composite decking better than wood?

Neither option is right for every homeowner. Composite decking typically requires less recurring maintenance and offers consistent colors and finishes. Natural wood provides a traditional appearance but usually requires more regular care. The best choice depends on your preferred look, maintenance expectations, and budget.

What is the best decking material for Minnesota weather?

The best material depends on the home, exposure, use, and maintenance preferences. Composite and PVC products are popular low-maintenance options. Natural wood remains an option for homeowners who prefer its appearance and are comfortable with ongoing care. Proper design and installation matter regardless of the surface material.

How long does it take to build a custom deck?

The timeline varies based on the size and complexity of the deck, material availability, site conditions, required approvals, scheduling, and weather. A customized or multi-level project may take longer than a straightforward deck. The project schedule should be discussed after the scope and materials are defined.

Can dREAmodel replace my existing deck?

Yes. dREamodel works with homeowners who want to replace aging decks and reconsider the layout, materials, railings, stairs, and other features. The appropriate approach depends on the condition of the existing structure and the goals for the new deck.

Can I replace wood decking with composite decking?

Composite decking can be part of a deck replacement or update, but the existing structure should be evaluated first. The framing, spacing, condition, and project design all affect what work is appropriate. Replacing only the surface may not address layout or structural concerns.

Do custom decks require permits?

Permit and approval requirements vary by municipality and project. Deck size, height, location, and structural details may affect what is required. These requirements should be addressed during project planning rather than assumed in advance.

What can be included in a custom deck design?

A custom deck may include multiple levels, stairs, railings, fascia, lighting, privacy features, storage, electrical elements, and coordinated material selections. The final features depend on the property, intended use, design, and project scope.

How do I maintain a composite deck?

Composite decking generally requires routine cleaning rather than sanding, staining, or sealing. Care requirements vary by manufacturer and product line, so homeowners should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and maintenance.
